The Big Duck "The Big Duck" is located on Flanders Road (State Route 24) in Flanders. "The Big Duck" is a Long Island Landmark of national, state, and local significance, which celebrates the once-vibrant and world-renown industry which produced Long Island duckling for restaurant internationally. It is now famous as a vestige of functional roadside architecture by virtue of its publication in numerous books and articles. It presently sits roadside adjacent to Sears Bellows Stables, under auspices of Suffolk County Parks. The Museum fosters connections among individuals, art, and artists through care and interpretation of the collection, the presentation of exhibitions, publications, educational initiatives, programs, and artists-in-residence. The Parrish is a center for cultural engagement, an inspiration and destination for the region, the nation, and the world. Built from Adirondack white pine, our facilities contains 5,000 square feet of exhibition space. Our Museum has recently added some new cultural material items to our permanent display. Originally on display at the Southampton Historical Museum in 2011, for their exhibition, 10,000 Years of Hunting and Fishing on Long Island, these items that help illustrate the different time periods of Shinnecock history: Paleolithic, Archaic, Woodland and Historic periods for their exhibition. Our Museum has now acquired these items for our main exhibit – A Walk with the People. Parks Dwarf Pines Plains Preserve Directions: Take route 27 to County Road 31 South toward Westhampton The trail head is located about 1/10 of a mile off of the exit on the east side of county road 31, turn left into the SCWA complex A recently opened trail allows the visitor to experience this unique ecosystem. The trail is 6/10 of a mile long and takes about 20 minutes to walk. Dwarf Pine Plain communities are rare ecosystems that exist in only a few locations in the entire world. The New Jersey Dwarf Pine Plains, the Shawangunk Mountains Dwarf Pine Plains, and the Long Island Dwarf Pine Plains are the three existing communities. The Dwarf Pine Plains earned its name from the height of the vegetation that exists in the community. Dominated by pitch pines and scrub oak, these trees will rarely exceed 3 to 6 feet in height. Since the Long Island Dwarf Pine Plain is a rare ecosystem, it supports some uncommon wildlife species. There is a wide array of bird species that use this habitat. The black-throated green warbler breeds commonly in this area. American kestrels and marsh hawks can be seen hunting for vole and mouse species. Nocturnal birds also inhabit this area. Some owls you may encounter are screech, northern saw-whet, and long-eared owls. Nighthawks and whippoorwills can also be heard in the Dwarf Pine Plains. Rowboat rentals are offered on freshwater Bellows Pond. Sears Bellows' extensive trail system attracts hikers and horseback riders from all points, east and west. Riders may use the park with a horseback riding permit. This park is closed to certain activities during waterfowl hunting season. Sears Bellows Park is a sportsman's paradise. Freshwater fishing for bluegill, bass, perch and pickerel, with bait, is permitted between sunrise and sunset. New York State regulations apply to all sporting activities. Quogue Wildlife Refuge 3 Old Country Road, Quogue, New York 11959 (631) 653–4771 The Refuge trails and Distressed Wildlife Complex are open every day from sunrise to sunset. The Nature Center Building is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Since 1934, the Quogue Wildlife Refuge has been a nature preserve that is home to diverse wildlife including some that are permanently injured and require human care to survive. 365 days a year, you can enjoy walking seven miles of trails to explore diverse habitats including forests and ponds, as well as the ecologically rare Dwarf Pines in the Pine Barrens. A bobcat, owls, falcons, eagles and other native New York animals that have permanent injuries are housed in the outdoor Distressed Wildlife Complex and can be visited any day of the year. Inside of the Nature Center, huge picture windows offer spectacular views of Old Ice Pond, as well as a great spot to bird watch or enjoy some quiet time. Comfy chairs, wildlife exhibits, live animals, a nature library, and gift shop can also be found inside of the Nature Center. Summer Concerts
